Look at that sexy wagon.

Looks like it dropped a driveshaft or two, but nice.
Is that a straight 6 I spy? Not familiar with Toyota’s engines.

I think there are other engines in other markets, most are diesel but in the US its a V8.

On the 80 series cruisers, they got an inline 6 in the states.

We’re sending the ZJ out to pasture and picking up an 84k mile ‘ 99 100 series this week.
I blame you.

this is an 80-series, but that doesn’t make your ‘99 any less cool! great find!

Driveshafts..shmiveshafts. Yeah, the 80 series from 93-97 got a great I6 that literally no one (except me) ever talks about. The 1FZ-FE. It’s like an AMC 4.0, but better in all the ways. 4.5 liters, 212 hp and 275 lbs-ft. DOHC, crossflow, super overbuilt (the crank weighs something like 75 lbs), oil squirters for the pistons, etc, etc. Turns out they can make a lot of power if you throw money at them
it was partially designed as an in dustrial engine and it was used in forklifts too.

I can effectively name zero engines, but I’ve definitely learned to recognize a straight 6 since buying my Jeep. Shame that engine didn’t stick around longer.

It stuck around a little longer overseas as the engine option in the 105 series (1998- 2005) with a few upgrades like new intake, pistons and distributorless ignition. It died out in 2005, but by the time it did it was a pretty competitive engine power wise at 240 hp/300 lbs feet. Given that the 2UZ-FE V8 at the time was 235 hp and 315 lbs-ft for 4.7 liters it was right up there. Of course it was WAY heavier and thirstier. Had they kept the engine and added VVTi to it like they did the V8 it would have really been something.
